During pregnancy a woman’s body goes through many changes both physically and physiologically. These changes are all made to enhance in the development of the young child,however, some of these changes also add stress to the woman’s spine and surrounding joints.
Misalignments to the spine can reduce the space available for the developing baby making it difficult for the baby to be in an optimal natural delivery position. This negatively affects the likelihood and ability of the woman having a natural pain freelabor and delivery. In addition, having the spine aligned properly takes the stress off of the nervous system allowing for ideal communication between the mother’s body and the developing child.
There are no contraindication to chiropractic care and pregnancy and all chiropractors are trained to treat expected mothers. Many advance their education and specialize in pregnancy and infant care.
The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics reported in the July/August 2002 issue an 82% success rate of babies turning to the vertex position when the Webster Technique, a specific advanced chiropractic technique used by many chiropractors, was used. The study suggests that it may be beneficial to perform the Webster Technique as soon as the 8th month of pregnancy when a woman has a breech babypresentation.
